Creating a Family Plan for Teenage Drivers

September 2006 (Medialink) - Learning to drive is a rite of passage. But for teenagers, it's a dangerous time. Did you know that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers? So what can parents do to help reduce the risks for their teenage drivers? Experts say the first thing to do is to map out a family plan. A family plan and contract has to include at least two things: one, a restriction on nighttime driving; and two, a restriction on passengers. Teens have to know that they are at a much higher risk when they drive at night and with other passengers in the car. Parents can contribute directly to their child's safety by requiring them to use safety belts at all times. They should also encourage their teen drivers to never drink while driving or ride with anyone who has been drinking.

Improving Young Drivers

Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers—an average of 16 young lives lost every day in this country. This frightening statistic has racecar drivers speaking out and doing something to help. A new safety video put together by Andy Pilgrim, the reigning SPEED World Challenge GT champion for Team Cadillac, and his NASCAR buddy, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., gives first-time drivers a serious lesson in road manners...right from the start. In the video, The Driving Zone, Pilgrim and Earnhardt stress cutting out distraction and focusing on the task of driving. The video takes young drivers through several scenarios and describes the right way to handle distractions, such as other passengers, cell phones and loud music.
